Western Areas gets environmental approval for open-pit nickel mine

Nickel sulphide explorer Western Areas has been granted the final consent by the Western Australian Minister for the Environment, to create an openpit mine at its Spottel Quoll nickel operation.

Independence Group mining profitably despite Australia’s nickel woes

In the week that Norlsk Nickel closed the rest of its Western Australian sulphide nickel operations and emptied out its surviving 330 workers, Independence Group NL (ASX: IGO),  showed that in the December quarter its cash operating costs were $A3.88/lb ($US2.48 /lb) while its return was above $A7/lb (+$US4.49/lb).

Norilsk suspends remaining Australian nickel mines

Norilsk Nickel (GMKN.MM: Quote) is suspending production at its last two active mines in Australia, the final victims of an economic crisis that has brought the Russian miner’s entire Australian network to a halt.

Major Norilsk Nickel expansion project gets Metso mills

Mineral prcessing equipment manufacturer Metso, which is headquarteed in Finand, will supply grinding equipment to Norilsk Nickel subsidiary Talnakh Concentrator in Northern Russia. Located at the Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia, the Talnakh Concentrator processes rich ores mined at the Talnakh and Oktyabrsky deposits to produce nickel, copper and pyrrhotite concentrates.
